Pueblo, Colo. – Heavy rainfall through Wednesday could lead to river flooding along the lower Arkansas River, with the highest risk between Pueblo and La Junta, according to the National Weather Service in Pueblo.

Widespread rain from Monday into midweek is raising concerns about rising water levels in rivers, creeks, and low-lying areas. The NWS warns that excessive rainfall could overwhelm drainage systems and trigger localized flooding along smaller tributaries and urban areas near the river corridor.

According to the agency, storm intensity and rainfall totals remain uncertain, but the timing and pattern of precipitation place the lower Arkansas River basin at moderate flood risk. Officials are closely monitoring storm development and will issue updates as needed.

Flood-prone zones in Otero, Pueblo, and Bent counties should prepare for possible water over roads and temporary closures on rural routes, especially near stream crossings. Motorists are urged to avoid flooded roadways and never attempt to drive through moving water. Residents should charge mobile devices, monitor NOAA Weather Radio or alerts on mobile apps, and plan for rapid response if warnings are issued.
