Colorado Springs, CO – Extreme cold will grip southern Colorado tonight, with wind chills plummeting to as low as -30°F in Pueblo, Canon City, and surrounding areas. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an Extreme Cold Warning from 5 p.m. Monday until 11 a.m. Tuesday, urging residents to limit outdoor exposure.
According to the NWS, frostbite can develop on exposed skin within 15 minutes in these conditions. Wind chills will dip to -35°F in the mountains and valleys. Light snow may add minor accumulations, particularly in higher elevations, before clearing overnight.
Travelers on I-25 and local roadways should exercise caution, as bitter cold temperatures can lead to mechanical issues. Wear layers, including a hat, face mask, and gloves. Those without adequate heating are advised to seek shelter immediately.
Tuesday will remain bitterly cold but sunny, with highs reaching only 12°F. Wind chills will stay well below zero in the morning before improving slightly by midday. Overnight lows will again drop to around -11°F.
Looking ahead, Wednesday brings some relief with a high near 39°F, but another cold front is expected by midweek, bringing potential snow to the high country. Temperatures will recover further into Thursday, climbing into the 40s.
Residents should remain vigilant and prepared for rapidly changing conditions. For emergency updates, monitor the National Weather Service or local authorities.
