Steamboat Springs, CO – Residents of Colorado’s Upper Yampa River and Gunnison River Basins face dangerously low temperatures through Tuesday. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Cold Weather Advisory and an Extreme Cold Watch, warning of conditions as low as 40 degrees below zero.
According to the NWS, the advisory begins tonight at midnight and continues through 9 a.m. Sunday for Yampa Basin areas, including Steamboat Springs. For the Gunnison Valley, the advisory runs from 10 p.m. Saturday to 11 a.m. Sunday. Extreme cold conditions are expected Monday night into Tuesday morning.
Frostbite can occur in minutes, with hypothermia likely if precautions aren’t taken. Officials urge residents to dress in layers, cover exposed skin, and limit outdoor activities. Pipes should be insulated or left dripping to prevent freezing, and portable heaters must be used safely.
Pet owners are advised to bring animals indoors or ensure they have proper shelter. Neighbors should check on the elderly and vulnerable.
The NWS emphasizes that these cold temperatures pose significant health risks. Residents are urged to prepare now to stay safe during this Arctic blast.
