Des Moines, IA – Central Iowa will experience life-threatening cold Sunday, with wind chills as low as -34 degrees. A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect from 3 a.m. to noon Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service, frostbite can occur in under 10 minutes on exposed skin at these temperatures. Counties impacted include Polk, Story, Dallas, and surrounding areas. Residents in southern Iowa, including Clarke and Appanoose counties, will face slightly warmer but still dangerous wind chills between -15 and -20.

The advisory warns of potentially repeated exposure to similar temperatures Monday and Tuesday mornings. Officials urge wearing insulated clothing, gloves, and hats when outside. Travel is discouraged unless absolutely necessary during the coldest hours.

Emergency services are prepared to respond to potential weather-related incidents, but residents are urged to take precautions. Keep extra blankets and winter supplies in vehicles, and limit outdoor exposure.

Prepare now for the extreme weather to reduce health risks and avoid frostbite. Updates are available from the National Weather Service.
