Richmond, VA – A coastal storm system is expected to impact Virginia and northeast North Carolina beginning Monday afternoon, bringing heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and coastal hazards through Tuesday night.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, widespread rain totals of 1 to 2 inches are likely across much of the region, with 2 to 3 inches or more possible in southeast Virginia and northeast North Carolina. The heaviest rainfall is forecast from Monday evening into Tuesday night, with lingering showers expected into Wednesday.
Forecasters warn that gusty winds could accompany the system, potentially leading to localized flooding and travel disruptions. In addition, a high risk of rip currents continues along Virginia Beach and the North Carolina coast, with moderate risks further north.
Sunday’s conditions remain warmer and calmer ahead of the storm, with highs in the low to mid-80s inland and upper 70s along the coast. Skies will vary from mostly sunny in the northwest to mostly cloudy toward the southeast.
Residents are urged to monitor forecasts and prepare for slippery roads, ponding water, and hazardous beach conditions as the system moves through.
