Clinton, OK – A routine patrol on Interstate 40 turned into a lifesaving emergency last week when an Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper discovered a driver in severe distress on the shoulder of the highway.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Trooper Eric Burchett #346 stopped to check on a Jeep pulled over near Clinton. As he approached the vehicle, he saw the driver was experiencing a critical medical crisis with self-inflicted injuries. Trooper Burchett immediately secured a knife from the man and called for an ambulance before retrieving his medical kit.

When the trooper returned to the vehicle, the driver attempted to stand and briefly struggled with him, OHP said. Trooper Burchett quickly gained control of the situation, ensuring the man could receive medical care without further harm to himself.

Recognizing the severity of the man’s condition, the trooper requested a medical helicopter for faster treatment. OHP Lt. Aaron Hunter #148 and a nearby police officer arrived moments later to assist. Together, they provided medical support and reassurance until EMS reached the scene. Paramedics transported the man to a local hospital for further care.

OHP said there is “no doubt” Trooper Burchett’s decision to stop and immediate action helped save the man’s life.

Mental health resources remain available to anyone experiencing distress. The Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is accessible 24/7 by calling or texting 988.
