Columbus, Ohio – More than 60 counties across Ohio, including the state’s largest cities, remain under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 7 p.m. Thursday as damaging winds and large hail threaten travel, utilities, and outdoor plans.

According to the National Weather Service and the Storm Prediction Center, the watch includes Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Akron, Dayton, and surrounding areas. Wind gusts could exceed 70 mph, with isolated hail up to one inch in diameter. Lightning and brief heavy downpours may also accompany these storms.

The watch spans from Adams and Ashtabula counties in the south and northeast to Franklin, Summit, and Warren counties in central and southwestern Ohio. Emergency officials urge residents to secure loose outdoor items, charge electronics in case of outages, and avoid travel during active storms. Power disruptions are likely in areas where wind gusts bring down trees and lines.

This is the first widespread severe weather event of May, following a quiet April for most of the state. Rural areas in southeastern Ohio, including Gallia, Meigs, and Athens counties, may face additional challenges with limited shelter access.

The severe weather threat is expected to ease after sunset, but new watches or warnings may be issued if storms redevelop. Stay alert for updates through local media or NOAA Weather Radio.
