Cleveland, Ohio – A fast-moving clipper system is expected to bring light snow across northern Ohio today, with brief periods of heavier snowfall and gusty winds creating travel concerns in some areas.
According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, snow will spread across the region through the morning and continue into the afternoon hours. Most locations are expected to receive between 1 and 2 inches of snowfall, with the greatest totals likely in the snowbelt of northeast Ohio and into northwest Pennsylvania.
Forecasters note that while snowfall rates will generally remain light, a short burst of heavier snow is possible later today, which could quickly reduce visibility and cause roads to become snow covered. Areas near Lake Erie, including Cleveland, Mentor, and Ashtabula, may see more persistent snow showers due to lake enhancement.
Southwest winds are expected to increase throughout the day, with gusts exceeding 30 mph at times. These winds may lead to areas of blowing snow, especially in open and rural locations across northwest Ohio. Motorists traveling along major corridors such as I-90, I-80, I-77, and I-71 should be prepared for changing road conditions.
The National Weather Service warned that even modest snowfall amounts can lead to slick conditions when combined with cold pavement temperatures. Bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads may become slippery, particularly during heavier snow showers.
For commuters, students, and delivery drivers, the afternoon commute may be most impacted if heavier snow develops during peak travel hours. Allowing extra time and reducing speeds is advised.
Snow is expected to taper off this evening as the system moves east, though lingering flurries may persist in the snowbelt overnight. Residents are encouraged to monitor forecast updates and road conditions as conditions can vary significantly over short distances.
