Minnesota – Dense freezing fog has blanketed parts of the state, creating dangerous travel conditions for drivers on Christmas Eve. The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) has issued advisories for major highways, including I-94 and roads near Starbuck and Evansville, where visibility is reduced to a quarter mile or less.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), temperatures remain below freezing, increasing the risk of slick surfaces, particularly on bridges and overpasses. Motorists are urged to use low-beam headlights and reduce speeds to avoid accidents during this hazardous weather event.

Today’s high in Minneapolis will reach 32°F, with calm winds expected in the afternoon. Freezing fog will likely persist into Christmas morning, impacting holiday travel plans across the region. By Christmas Day, cloudy skies and a high of 34°F are forecast, with slightly improved driving conditions.

Looking ahead, rain chances increase midweek, with a 20% chance Thursday afternoon and 50% by Friday. Temperatures will climb to 40°F on Friday, accompanied by rain that may persist into Saturday.

MnDOT advises monitoring road conditions through their 511 service and postponing unnecessary travel until visibility improves. Drivers should also allow extra travel time and ensure vehicles are prepared for icy conditions.
