Channahon, IL – An Illinois State Police trooper was struck by a vehicle early Christmas Eve on Interstate 55 near Channahon.

According to Illinois State Police (ISP), the trooper was removing debris from the roadway when the incident occurred. Preliminary information suggests the trooper had exited the squad car to ensure safety when a passing vehicle hit them. The trooper’s condition has not been disclosed, and no further details about the driver have been released.

The crash serves as a stark reminder of Scott’s Law, also known as the Move Over Law. Enacted in Illinois following the 2000 death of Chicago Fire Lt. Scott Gillen, the law requires drivers to reduce speed and move over for emergency or disabled vehicles. Violating this law can result in steep fines and mandatory court appearances.

Authorities stress the importance of adhering to the Move Over Law to protect emergency responders. ISP continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident.

Drivers are urged to exercise caution during holiday travel to prevent further incidents and ensure the safety of roadside workers.
