Chicago, Illinois – Heavy rain and embedded thunderstorms are expected to move across northern Illinois late Monday night, with strong storms likely south of I-80 and periods of intense rain continuing into Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, the first wave of storms will arrive after midnight, with the heaviest rainfall Tuesday focused north of I-80. Windy conditions and falling temperatures will accompany the rain, with highs struggling to reach the low 60s by midweek.
In Chicago, wind gusts could reach 30 mph Tuesday, creating a sloppy commute, especially near the Lake Michigan shoreline. Naperville, Joliet, and Kankakee may see stronger storm cells, while Rockford and Waukegan face consistent showers. Cooler air pushes in by Wednesday, keeping high temps in the 50s, well below seasonal averages.
Drivers are urged to slow down on wet roads and avoid flooded underpasses. Power outages are possible with stronger cells, so charging devices and having flashlights ready is wise.
Rain chances taper off by Thursday, but below-normal temperatures will linger into Friday. Additional updates or advisories may be issued as rainfall totals increase.
