Chicago, Illinois – Residents across northern Illinois should prepare now for a potentially dangerous round of severe weather Wednesday as forecasters warn that tornadoes, destructive wind gusts, large hail and flash flooding could all develop across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, thunderstorms Wednesday will be capable of producing large, damaging hail, destructive thunderstorm winds, tornadoes, torrential rainfall and flash flooding. The agency says confidence is growing that a significant severe weather event will impact portions of northern Illinois and northwest Indiana during the afternoon and evening hours.
The threat zone includes Chicago, Rockford, Joliet, Aurora, Elgin, Waukegan, DeKalb, Kankakee and surrounding communities. While forecasters continue refining where the most intense storms will develop, much of the region remains under a heightened severe weather risk heading into Wednesday.
Travel could become hazardous along Interstates 90, 94, 80, 88, 55 and 294 as storms intensify. Torrential rainfall may overwhelm drainage systems in urban areas, leading to rapid flooding on roadways, underpasses and low-lying locations. Strong winds could down trees and power lines, causing scattered power outages.
Wednesday’s setup is part of a larger Midwest severe weather event expected from Missouri and Iowa eastward through Illinois, Indiana and Ohio. The Storm Prediction Center warns that widespread severe thunderstorms are likely, with damaging wind swaths, large hail and tornadoes all possible.
Unlike Tuesday’s isolated severe threat, Wednesday carries the potential for more widespread impacts. Residents should charge phones and backup batteries Tuesday night, review shelter plans, and ensure multiple methods of receiving warnings are available before storms arrive.
