MILWAUKEE, Wis. – A powerful fall gale is churning across Lake Michigan Sunday night, with dangerous marine conditions expected to last into early Monday morning. Winds up to 35 knots and waves approaching 10 feet will pound the southern third of the lake, threatening small craft and larger vessels alike.

According to the National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan, a Gale Warning is in effect from 6 p.m. Sunday through 6 a.m. CST Monday, covering waters from North Point Light, Wisconsin, to St. Joseph, Michigan. The roughest conditions are expected overnight as strong southwest winds whip across the open lake, reducing visibility and producing steep, breaking waves.

The agency warned that the combination of high winds and rough seas could capsize or damage vessels that venture offshore. The U.S. Coast Guard advises mariners to remain in port or seek safe harbor until winds subside Monday morning. Shoreside residents from Racine to South Haven may also notice crashing surf and possible minor beach erosion.

Travelers using ferry routes or shoreline highways such as I-94 and US-31 may experience gusty crosswinds, especially on elevated bridges. Those near the lakeshore are urged to secure boats, docks, and loose gear before nightfall.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve by late Monday morning as winds ease and shift westward, marking another blustery chapter in this active Fall 2025 weather pattern.
