Palos Hills, IL – With warmer weather returning, Palos Hills police are reminding residents that new rules governing e-bikes and e-scooters are now in effect across the city.

According to the Palos Hills Police Department, Ordinance 2025-19 outlines where and how electric bicycles and scooters can be operated. Low-speed e-bikes are allowed on streets with speed limits of 20 mph or less but are not permitted on sidewalks or in public parks. Riders under 16 must wear a helmet.

Low-speed e-scooters face stricter limits, with use restricted to sidewalks only. Operators must be at least 18 years old, and speeds are capped at 10 mph. High-speed e-bikes and scooters must follow standard traffic laws, are prohibited on sidewalks, bike paths, and parks, and require a licensed operator in Illinois.

Officials say all devices must be equipped with lights and reflectors and properly labeled to show their classification.

Police urge riders to review the full ordinance and follow safety guidelines as usage increases this spring. Additional enforcement is possible as more residents take to streets and sidewalks.
