Gaylord, MI – Visibility could drop below one mile in heavier snow showers this evening, creating hazardous driving conditions across northern Michigan before conditions improve overnight.
According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, scattered snow showers will continue through the evening across the eastern Upper Peninsula and northern Lower Michigan, with the most intense bursts reducing visibility quickly on roadways. Snowfall amounts are expected to remain light, generally under 1 inch in northern Lower Michigan, with slightly higher amounts possible in parts of the eastern U.P.
Temperatures will fall sharply overnight, dipping to between 7°F and 15°F in the eastern Upper Peninsula and into the teens and low 20s across northern Lower Michigan. This will allow any moisture on roads to refreeze, increasing the risk of black ice during the early morning hours.
Cities including Gaylord, Alpena, and Sault Ste. Marie may see slick conditions during the Tuesday morning commute, especially on untreated roads and bridges.
A warming trend begins Wednesday, with highs climbing into the upper 30s to low 50s and a transition to rain expected Wednesday night. Temperatures could reach the upper 50s to low 60s by Thursday, ending the midweek cold snap.
