Chicago, Illinois – Drivers across the Chicago metro area should prepare for slippery roads and dangerous cold as periods of snow affect the region through the weekend, followed by sharply colder air Sunday night into early Monday.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, light but persistent snow is expected at times today and again Sunday, with most accumulations in the 1 to 2 inch range. While totals are modest, cold pavement temperatures will allow snow to accumulate quickly, increasing the risk for slick travel conditions.

Snow is most likely during the afternoon and evening hours both today and Sunday. Roadways including Interstates 90, 94, 290, 55, and Lake Shore Drive may become snow-covered at times, with reduced visibility during steadier snow bands. Shallow drifting snow is also possible Sunday night as winds increase.

The most significant concern arrives late Sunday night into early Monday as much colder air pours into northern Illinois. Temperatures will fall sharply, with wind chills dropping between 15 and 25 degrees below zero. Any slush or moisture left on roadways is expected to refreeze, creating icy conditions for the Monday morning commute.

Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of snow and bitter cold. Conditions may improve gradually by midweek, but winter hazards remain likely through the start of the workweek.
