Illinois – Snowflakes are already spinning across northern Illinois as a fresh Winter Weather Advisory grips the region from midnight through 9 a.m. Sunday. Streets glisten under a cold 29°F sky, and the wind’s sharp edge signals that winter travel conditions are here to stay.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, 2 to 5 inches of snow are expected across Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry, and Will counties, making early travel slick and potentially hazardous. Drivers should anticipate slower commutes and reduced visibility, especially on I-90, I-294, and local Chicago expressways.

Forecasters warn that even light freezing drizzle ahead of the snow may create black ice on untreated surfaces. Once snow begins to fall in earnest, accumulation will build steadily through Sunday morning before tapering off by midday. Gusty north winds could create brief blowing snow near open areas and lakefront neighborhoods.

By Sunday afternoon, temperatures will hold near 30°F before dipping to the low 20s by Monday. The start of the new week looks mostly dry but cold, with highs only near the mid-20s. Another quick-moving system could bring a light snow chance by Tuesday night, part of a larger series of clipper systems sweeping the Great Lakes through mid-December.

Meteorologists say lake-effect snow may persist regionally Dec. 11–17, setting the stage for a colder, snowier lead-up to the holidays.

Plan extra time if driving Sunday morning—roads will be slick, especially before sunrise.
