Chicago, Illinois – Drivers and evening commuters across northern Illinois face a fast-moving line of thunderstorms capable of dropping hail larger than 2 inches and knocking down tree limbs before 11 p.m. tonight.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, storm coverage will increase through the afternoon, with the most intense cells developing along and south of Interstate 80, including Joliet, Kankakee, and Pontiac. The agency warns that storms will track east at 50 to 60 mph, reducing reaction time and rapidly changing road conditions.
Chicago itself may see strong storms, but the highest risk zone stretches from LaSalle County through Kankakee County into northwest Indiana. Large hail could damage vehicles and roofs, while localized wind gusts may bring down branches and power lines. Travel along I-80, I-55, and connecting state routes could be briefly hazardous during heavier cells.
Residents are urged to move indoors at the first sound of thunder and secure vehicles in covered areas if possible. Keep phones charged and monitor alerts, especially during the evening commute window.
Storms are expected to weaken late tonight, but additional advisories could be issued if conditions intensify before 11 p.m.
