Dodge City, Kansas – Any spark could turn into a fast-moving wildfire across western Kansas within minutes Friday, as powerful winds and extremely dry air combine to create explosive fire conditions through the evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, a Red Flag Warning remains in effect until 9 p.m. CDT, with southwest winds increasing to 25 to 35 mph and gusts reaching 45 mph. Relative humidity is المتوقع to drop as low as 5 to 10 percent, especially during peak afternoon heating.
Communities including Garden City, Liberal, Hays, and Dodge City sit in the highest risk zone, where open fields and dry grasses can ignite and spread across rural roads and highways like U.S. 50 and U.S. 283. Emergency managers warn that even routine activities—such as towing trailers, using machinery, or discarding cigarettes—could trigger fires that outrun response crews.
Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged statewide, and residents are urged to avoid any activity that could produce sparks. Fire departments across western counties are on heightened alert, with rapid response likely needed if multiple fires ignite simultaneously.
These conditions will persist through sunset, with winds slowly easing overnight. Additional advisories could be issued if dry and windy patterns continue into the weekend.
