Chicago, IL – Temperatures will swing sharply across northern Illinois this afternoon, with lakeshore areas dropping into the 50s by mid-afternoon while inland communities hold onto the 70s.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, a lake breeze will push inland by early to mid-afternoon Friday, causing temperatures near Lake Michigan to fall quickly while areas south of I-80 remain significantly warmer. Highs will range from the 60s near the lake to the low 70s farther inland before the cooling shift arrives.

Communities including Chicago, Evanston, and Gary will feel the cooldown first, with noticeable temperature drops expected between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Meanwhile, Joliet, Kankakee, and areas farther southwest may stay warmer longer before cooler air spreads.

Saturday brings more consistent warmth, with highs between 63 and 73 degrees under partly sunny skies. By Sunday, breezy conditions return with another afternoon cooldown near the lake and a chance for scattered showers.

Residents should prepare for rapid temperature changes, especially near the shoreline. Dry conditions dominate into early next week, though additional updates are expected if Sunday rain chances increase.
