Chicago, IL – Smoke from Canadian wildfires is blanketing northeastern Illinois this evening, raising air quality concerns for millions across the region, especially children, seniors, and those with respiratory conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, elevated levels of fine particulate matter have pushed the EPA Air Quality Index into the “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” category across Cook, La Salle, Dupage, and surrounding counties. The advisory remains in effect through early Friday.
The city and surrounding suburbs are experiencing visibly hazy skies and stagnant air. Residents are urged to limit strenuous outdoor activities, particularly during the evening hours when air stagnation worsens.
People with asthma or chronic respiratory illness should remain indoors with windows closed and consider using air purifiers. Schools and childcare centers are advised to monitor children closely during outdoor activities.
Air quality is expected to gradually improve by Friday afternoon, but officials caution that additional smoke intrusions are possible if northern fires persist.
