Cheyenne, WY – Travel along major Wyoming highways could become dangerous within hours as powerful wind gusts ramp up Thursday evening, threatening to overturn high-profile vehicles through Friday.
According to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, a High Wind Warning begins as early as 6 p.m. Thursday near Bordeaux along Interstate 25, expanding to Cheyenne by 9 p.m. Gusts between 70 and 80 mph are expected across the Laramie Range and surrounding foothills, with the strongest winds targeting the Interstate 80 Summit between Cheyenne and Laramie.
Drivers along I-25 between Chugwater and Wheatland and along I-80 near Arlington, Elk Mountain, and Vedauwoo will face severe crosswinds capable of blowing over semis, campers, and trailers. Wind-prone corridors in southeast Wyoming are likely to see sudden gusts that reduce vehicle control, especially overnight into Friday morning.
Officials urge truckers and drivers of lightweight vehicles to delay travel or use extreme caution. Sudden gusts may also lead to minor structural damage and difficult driving conditions across open terrain.
High winds will persist through Friday evening, with the strongest gusts continuing along exposed ridges and highway corridors. Additional advisories or road restrictions may be issued as conditions intensify.
