Cheyenne, Wyo. – Summer heat will peak across southeast Wyoming and the Nebraska Panhandle on Monday before a surge of monsoon moisture brings increasing thunderstorm coverage and the potential for heavy rainfall through the middle of the week.
According to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, Monday will be the hottest day of the week, with highs reaching 93 degrees in Cheyenne, 99 in Douglas, 101 in Alliance, 102 in Scottsbluff, 100 in Sidney and 102 in Torrington. Temperatures will gradually return to near seasonal averages beginning Tuesday as deeper moisture spreads northward into the region.
Thunderstorm chances increase each day, with the highest probabilities arriving Wednesday and Thursday. Forecasters say storms will be capable of producing very heavy rainfall, especially during the middle of the week, as the Southwest monsoon strengthens across the Rockies. Communities including Cheyenne, Laramie, Douglas, Rawlins, Scottsbluff, Sidney and Torrington could experience repeated rounds of showers and thunderstorms.
Heavy rain may lead to localized flooding in low-lying areas, especially where storms repeatedly track over the same locations. Drivers should be alert for water-covered roads and rapidly changing conditions, while those with outdoor plans should monitor forecasts closely and move indoors when thunder is heard.
Temperatures will cool noticeably after Monday, with highs settling into the 80s for much of the region through the end of the workweek. Additional weather statements or advisories may be issued if confidence increases in areas expected to receive the heaviest rainfall.
