Channahon, IL – The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has announced the start of repairs for the I-55 bridge over the Des Plaines River in Channahon on Tuesday, Sept. 3. The project will involve overnight and weekend lane closures in both directions of I-55 as crews work to address the aging infrastructure. During these closures, only one lane will remain open, leading to potential delays.

The scheduled closures will take place from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, 9 p.m. Fridays to 9 a.m. Saturdays, and 9 p.m. Saturdays to 11 a.m. Sundays. Motorists are encouraged to plan alternative routes as heavy traffic is expected in the area.

According to the Wilmington Police Department, the city anticipates an increase in traffic congestion around town, especially during peak travel times. They urge drivers to be patient and allow extra time for their commutes. Police also reminded residents to avoid unnecessary 911 calls regarding traffic delays, highlighting that the closures are temporary but necessary for the safety of all travelers.

IDOT advises travelers to plan ahead and use alternate routes when possible. Major delays are expected, and the department encourages caution when traveling through the area.
