Springfield, Illinois – Windy and sharply colder conditions persisted across central Illinois early Monday, with wind chills forecast to drop below zero during the morning hours and again overnight into Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, lowest wind chills early Monday ranged from around -5 to -10 degrees across much of the region, with isolated areas experiencing values near -10 degrees. The dangerous cold was intensified by strong northwest winds gusting between 40 and 50 miles per hour, increasing the risk of frostbite and hypothermia for anyone exposed outdoors.

Forecasters said the frigid start follows the passage of a strong cold front, bringing a brief return to more seasonable conditions later in the week. Despite some improvement during the daytime hours, Monday night will bring another round of wind chills below zero, with values expected to range from -8 to -14 degrees in parts of central Illinois.

High temperatures on Monday were expected to reach only the upper teens to mid-20s, followed by slightly milder highs in the lower 30s Tuesday. Overnight lows Tuesday night are forecast to fall back into the teens and low 20s, maintaining a cold pattern before a gradual warming trend midweek.

The National Weather Service urged residents to dress in layers, limit time outdoors, and cover exposed skin, especially during the morning and overnight hours. Extra caution was advised for those commuting early, as wind chills may remain dangerously low during peak travel times.

Cold-sensitive populations, including young children, older adults, and pets, were encouraged to remain indoors when possible. Officials also recommended checking on neighbors and ensuring vehicles are prepared for cold-weather conditions.

The cold snap marks one of the sharpest temperature drops of the season for central Illinois, reinforcing the need for continued winter preparedness as December comes to a close.
