Champaign, IL – A third teenager has been arrested in connection with a July 15 shooting that left a 14-year-old boy wounded in Champaign.
According to the Champaign Police Department, officers responded to a shooting around 5:01 p.m. that Monday in the 1100 block of N. Third Street. Authorities located a 14-year-old male suffering from multiple potentially life-threatening gunshot wounds. He was treated on the scene by police and the Champaign Fire Department before being transported to an area hospital. The victim has since been released and is continuing to recover.
Investigators believe the shooting occurred in the outdoor common area of a nearby apartment complex. The 14-year-old was reportedly approached by multiple individuals and shot several times before the suspects fled. Officers recovered multiple shell casings and noted property damage in the area.
Two teenagers—a 15-year-old and a 16-year-old, both from Champaign—were taken into custody the night of the incident. On Thursday, a third suspect, a 17-year-old male from Champaign, was also arrested for his alleged involvement. Due to the suspects’ ages, authorities are not releasing their names. Police confirmed two firearms were recovered during the investigation.
Despite the arrests, police said the investigation remains ongoing and additional updates may be released. The United States Marshals Service Great Lakes Regional Task Force assisted with the latest arrest.
