Lanett, AL – State agents are investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting in Chambers County after a wanted Lanett man was fatally shot during a police encounter Sunday, Nov. 23.

According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), the agency’s State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) launched an inquiry at the request of the Lanett Police Department. The incident involved officers from both the Lanett Police Department and the Auburn Police Department, who were assisting the U.S. Marshals Task Force.

Investigators say the confrontation occurred when officers attempted to arrest Jaja Davis Jr., 27, of Lanett. Davis was wanted for allegedly firing into a Lanett Police Department patrol vehicle earlier in the week. When officers located him a second time in the 1000 block of Magnolia Drive in Lanett, Davis allegedly exchanged gunfire with police.

Davis was struck during the exchange and later pronounced dead at a local hospital. No officers were injured, ALEA confirmed.

Officials stated the investigation remains active, and findings will be turned over to the Chambers County District Attorney’s Office once complete.
