The incident involved officers from both the Lanett Police Department and the Auburn Police Department, who were assisting the U.S. Marshals Task Force.
Investigators say the confrontation occurred when officers attempted to arrest Jaja Davis Jr., 27, of Lanett. Davis was wanted for allegedly firing into a Lanett Police Department patrol vehicle earlier in the week. When officers located him a second time in the 1000 block of Magnolia Drive in Lanett, Davis allegedly exchanged gunfire with police.
Davis was struck during the exchange and later pronounced dead at a local hospital. No officers were injured, ALEA confirmed.
