San Antonio, Texas – Heavy rain is hammering Central Texas this morning, threatening flash flooding and road closures from Austin to San Antonio as a Flood Watch remains in effect until 1 p.m. Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service, rain rates of 1 to 3 inches per hour are falling across the Hill Country, Edwards Plateau, I-35 Corridor, and Rio Grande Plains. Maverick and Zavala counties have just been added to the watch, with some areas possibly seeing up to 6 inches in isolated downpours. Rapid runoff is causing rivers, creeks, and low-water crossings to rise quickly, especially where soils are already saturated.

Travel across key highways—including I-35, US-281, and TX-90—may be hazardous, with potential street flooding in cities like Austin, San Antonio, Del Rio, and Uvalde. Emergency management teams urge drivers to avoid water-covered roads and stay weather-aware, as flash flooding can occur with little warning. Power outages are possible where water impacts infrastructure.

Residents should charge devices, prepare for possible detours, and monitor alerts. Today’s flooding risk mirrors severe June rain events seen in recent years.

Flood alerts remain in effect until at least 1 p.m., and additional advisories could be issued if rain persists.
