State College, PA – Residents across central and northern Pennsylvania are being urged to prepare for dangerously cold conditions as the National Weather Service issues Cold Weather Advisories covering a large portion of the state through Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in State College, the advisories will be in effect from 9 p.m. Monday through noon to 1 p.m. EST Tuesday, with wind chills ranging from 10 to 20 degrees below zero expected during the coldest overnight and early-morning hours.
Impacted counties include Warren, McKean, Potter, Elk, Cameron, Tioga, Lycoming, Sullivan, Clearfield, Cambria, Somerset, Centre, Blair, Bedford, and Clinton counties. Communities such as State College, Altoona, Johnstown, DuBois, Somerset, Lock Haven, Wellsboro, Coudersport, Bradford, Emporium, and St. Marys are expected to experience the harshest conditions.
Meteorologists warn that exposure to these temperatures can quickly become dangerous, with frostbite possible on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes, and hypothermia a serious risk with prolonged exposure. Higher elevations and open rural areas may experience even colder wind chills overnight.
Officials urge residents to limit time outdoors, wear multiple layers, hats, and gloves, and keep pets indoors. Drivers traveling overnight are advised to keep emergency supplies in their vehicles, especially in more remote areas.
Residents are also encouraged to check on elderly neighbors, family members, and anyone without reliable heating as the cold intensifies overnight.
Temperatures are expected to gradually improve Tuesday afternoon, but officials stress that the overnight and early-morning hours pose the greatest danger across much of the region.
Residents should continue to monitor updates from the National Weather Service and follow all advisories as this Arctic air mass impacts Pennsylvania.
