New York, NY – Residents should brace for another bitterly cold day Thursday as temperatures struggle to reach 30 degrees. Wind chills will make it feel even colder, dropping into single digits or below zero in some areas. Commuters should prepare for icy spots on sidewalks and bridges, particularly during the early morning.
According to the National Weather Service, Thursday will bring mostly sunny skies but a high of only 30 degrees. Wind chill values will range between 10 and 20 degrees due to west-southwest winds of 5 to 15 mph. The low will dip to 18 degrees Thursday night, with similarly frigid wind chill values.
The cold snap will persist into Friday, with highs near 31 degrees. Despite sunny skies, northwest winds of up to 15 mph will keep conditions brisk. Nighttime lows Friday will hover around 18 degrees. Residents are urged to dress in layers, cover exposed skin, and limit outdoor time to avoid frostbite.
Looking ahead, Saturday offers slightly warmer temperatures with a high near 31 degrees, but nighttime lows will remain below freezing at 27. Sunday may provide relief as highs climb to 38 degrees under mostly cloudy skies.
Drivers on major roadways like FDR Drive and the West Side Highway should use caution in the mornings as icy patches are likely. The city also recommends checking on vulnerable neighbors and pets during the extreme cold.
