Bismarck, North Dakota – Damaging winds and severe thunderstorms continue tearing across central North Dakota overnight, with 60 mph gusts threatening power outages and tree damage in cities from Bismarck to Devils Lake. The fast-moving storm line, which struck Bismarck just after 1 a.m., has already produced a 62 mph wind gust at the airport and forced residents across Burleigh, Morton, Kidder, Wells, and surrounding counties to seek shelter.

According to the National Weather Service, severe thunderstorm warnings remain in effect until at least 2 a.m. Friday for areas including Mandan, Lincoln, New Salem, Harvey, and Devils Lake, as the storms track east at up to 70 mph. Officials warn drivers to avoid travel on I-94, US-83, and other major routes overnight due to falling branches and low visibility. Penny-size hail is possible, especially near Wells and Sheridan counties, with radar indicating quarter-size hail near Devils Lake.

Emergency managers are urging everyone to stay indoors, charge cell phones in case of power loss, and move to an interior room on the lowest floor. Utility crews are on alert for downed lines, while law enforcement asks residents not to call 911 unless there is an emergency or injury. Campgrounds and lakeside communities from Crown Butte Lake to Lakewood Park should prepare for sudden gusts and localized flooding.

The severe weather threat will persist through dawn, with additional advisories possible as the storm line races east. Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio or local media for updates as warnings remain in effect through early Friday morning.
