Southern Cayuga, Cortland, Chenango & Otsego Counties — Lake-effect snow will increase overnight and persist into Friday, leading to slick travel and occasional visibility drops across portions of central New York. A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 1 a.m. Friday through early Saturday morning. Total snowfall of 3 to 7 inches is expected, and wind gusts up to 35 mph will produce blowing and drifting snow across rural stretches of Route 20, I-81, and NY-12.

Steuben County’s advisory begins earlier, from Weather Today – Thanksgiving Day 2025 at 7 a.m. through early Saturday. Forecast totals range from 3 to 6 inches, with gusts up to 40 mph reducing visibility at times, especially near higher terrain south of Corning and Hornell. According to meteorologists, quick transitions between clear skies and intense snow bands may make travel hazardous through Friday afternoon. According to New York 511, early slick spots may develop on untreated roads this morning.

Drivers should slow down, leave extra space, and be prepared for fast-changing conditions under lake-effect bands. Keep a winter kit in your vehicle—flashlight, food, water, and warm layers—if travel is unavoidable. Snow showers continue into early Saturday before tapering.
