Binghamton, New York – Drivers across central New York and nearby northeast Pennsylvania should prepare for slick roads beginning late Tuesday afternoon as a wintry mix spreads into the region, creating hazardous travel through Wednesday morning. The most difficult conditions are expected during the Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning commutes as temperatures hover near freezing.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from late Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday morning for Oneida County, much of central New York, and portions of northeast Pennsylvania. A mix of snow, freezing rain, rain, and occasional sleet is expected, with ice accumulations around a tenth of an inch. Localized areas near and just north of the Mohawk Valley could see ice amounts closer to a quarter inch.

Communities including Utica, Rome, Boonville, Oneonta, Delhi, Monticello, Walton, and Honesdale may see rapidly changing road conditions as precipitation types fluctuate through the evening. In northern Oneida County, snow and freezing rain may switch back and forth, while southern Oneida County and the Mohawk Valley are more likely to see freezing rain mixed with rain before changing back to wet snow overnight.

Motorists are urged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and use caution on bridges, hills, and untreated roads. Slick sidewalks and driveways could also increase the risk of falls. Advisories remain in effect through Wednesday morning, and travel conditions may remain difficult until temperatures rise later in the day.
