Mississippi drivers start Christmas morning creeping through gray, low-hanging fog that blurs taillights and swallows familiar road signs. Damp air clings to windshields across central and eastern parts of the state, creating an uneasy start for early holiday travel.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect through midmorning. Visibility may drop to a quarter mile or less in many locations, including Jackson, Meridian, Hattiesburg, and surrounding communities. Calm winds and near-saturated air allow fog to thicken in low spots and along rivers.
Travel along I-20, I-55, I-220, and Highway 49 could become hazardous through the morning commute. Sudden visibility drops are possible, especially near open fields and wooded stretches. Drivers should slow down, increase following distance, and use headlights rather than high beams.
Fog gradually lifts later this morning, revealing a warm and quiet pattern. Sunshine dominates much of today, with temperatures rising into the mid to upper 70s. For now, conditions feel more like early fall than late December, and weekend travel looks smooth.
Friday through Saturday stays dry and warm. Highs approach 80 degrees, and winds remain light. Meteorologists are tracking a change late Sunday as clouds increase and moisture returns. Showers become more likely Sunday night, with gusty winds developing after sunset.
Behind the rain, colder air moves in quickly. Temperatures drop into the lower 40s by early Monday, then fall toward the mid-20s Monday night. That sharp transition raises concern for frost and a brief freeze across central Mississippi. Wet roads could turn slick before dawn.
Plan extra time this morning, enjoy the warm stretch, and prepare for colder conditions as post-Christmas travel wraps up. Additional weather alerts may be issued as the pattern shifts into early winter mode.
