Frederick, Maryland – Central Maryland communities near the Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Delaware borders could see renewed winter impacts as a late-January pattern increases the likelihood of accumulating snow across the region.

According to the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center, central Maryland is included in a slight risk for heavy snow from Saturday through the following Friday, pointing to a higher chance for one or more organized winter systems during that timeframe. The risk is focused on inland and northern portions of the state, where colder air is more likely to remain locked in.

In western and north-central Maryland, including Frederick and Hagerstown, temperatures trending below normal favor snow as the dominant precipitation type. That could lead to slick conditions along Interstates 70 and 81, as well as Route 15, particularly during overnight and early morning hours.

Farther east, communities near the Pennsylvania line such as Towson and parts of Baltimore County could also see accumulating snow if systems track far enough south. Even moderate snowfall could slow travel along Interstate 83, the Baltimore Beltway, and major commuter routes.

Maryland Department of Transportation officials encourage residents to monitor road conditions, allow extra travel time, and prepare vehicles with winter safety supplies. With colder air expected to persist, any snow that falls may linger between systems.

More specific timing details and possible winter weather advisories are expected as the late-January window approaches, with confidence increasing by early next week.
