Des Moines, IA – Thick fog will blanket much of central Iowa Sunday morning, prompting a Dense Fog Advisory that will remain in effect until 11 a.m. CST. Visibility may drop to one quarter mile or less, creating hazardous driving conditions, especially along major routes like Interstate 235 and Highway 65.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), residents in Des Moines and surrounding areas should allow extra travel time, use low-beam headlights, and slow down during morning commutes. Untreated roads may also see minor ice buildup from freezing fog.
Fog will begin lifting after 1 p.m. Sunday, with mostly cloudy skies and highs near 40°F. Sunday night brings more patchy dense fog between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m., with lows settling at 33°F.
By Monday, conditions improve as skies clear and winds pick up. Expect sunny skies, breezy conditions, and highs reaching 46°F. Winds will shift westward at 11-17 mph, with gusts up to 23 mph in the afternoon.
Looking ahead, Tuesday brings partly sunny skies and calm winds with highs near 42°F. However, a slight chance of rain and snow returns Tuesday night, with temperatures dropping to 20°F. By midweek, colder air settles in, with highs only reaching 28°F Wednesday under mostly sunny skies.
Residents should remain cautious while traveling Sunday morning and stay tuned for any additional updates from the National Weather Service.
