Des Moines, Iowa – Triple-digit heat will blanket much of Iowa through Sunday night, with heat index values expected to climb as high as 106° in cities like Des Moines, Ames, and Marshalltown.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, a Heat Advisory is now in effect from noon Friday through 9 p.m. Sunday for central, northern, and southern Iowa. Counties under advisory include Polk, Dallas, Story, Boone, Jasper, and Marion. The previous Extreme Heat Watch has been canceled, but officials warn the heat will still pose significant health risks.

Urban centers and rural towns alike are urged to take precautions as the combination of heat and humidity could lead to heat-related illness, especially for outdoor workers, children, and the elderly. Cities such as Indianola, Pella, and Clarion are all expected to see dangerous conditions, particularly during late afternoon hours.

Residents are advised to limit outdoor activity, stay hydrated, wear light clothing, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Cooling centers may be available locally — check city websites or county emergency management updates for resources.

The advisory remains in effect through Sunday evening, and more warnings could follow if conditions intensify.
