Indianapolis, IN – Strong to severe storms could develop by late afternoon today, with the potential to disrupt the evening commute across central Indiana.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, isolated storms are expected to form between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Friday, with damaging wind gusts as the primary threat. The risk covers much of central Indiana, including Indianapolis, Lafayette, Terre Haute, and Bloomington.
While storm coverage will remain limited, any cell that strengthens could produce wind gusts up to 60 mph, capable of downing tree limbs and causing scattered power outages. Brief heavy rainfall may also reduce visibility along major routes like I-65, I-70, and I-69 during peak travel hours.
Most areas will not see storms, but conditions can change quickly where storms develop. Residents should secure loose outdoor items and be prepared for sudden weather changes late in the day.
A more organized system is expected Monday, with a higher likelihood of widespread severe storms developing after 5 p.m. and continuing into the overnight hours. Additional alerts may be issued as confidence increases heading into the weekend.
