Indianapolis, Indiana – Thunderstorms and sweltering heat could create dangerous conditions across central Indiana starting Sunday as a high-pressure system stalls over the region. With heat index values approaching 100°F and rain chances rising, residents of Indianapolis and surrounding counties should take precautions beginning mid-morning Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, Sunday will start hot and mostly sunny before scattered thunderstorms develop after 11 a.m. Some storms may bring gusty winds and brief downpours, with a 50% chance of rain into the evening. Temperatures will reach 92°F, but humidity will make it feel closer to triple digits.

Localized impacts could slow traffic along I-465 and I-70, especially during peak travel times Sunday afternoon. Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, drink water frequently, and check on vulnerable individuals, especially children and older adults.

Thunderstorm chances continue daily through at least Thursday, with a mix of afternoon and evening storms possible. Monday will be slightly cooler at 86°F, but humidity will remain high. Tuesday and Wednesday each bring a 40–50% chance of storms and highs in the upper 80s.
