Indianapolis, IN – Central Indiana is under a severe weather alert with thunderstorms expected to bring damaging winds and large hail this evening. According to the National Weather Service (NWS) Indianapolis, the storms are forecasted to continue through 8 PM, with frequent lightning posing additional risks.
A marginal risk of severe thunderstorms has been identified for the area. Winds could exceed 58 mph, and hail larger than 1 inch is possible, with isolated flooding due to heavy rain. Residents are advised to remain indoors during the storms.
Showers and thunderstorms will persist into tomorrow, with cooler temperatures expected overnight. However, a heat wave is predicted to begin this weekend, with highs nearing 90 degrees by Saturday. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to return as temperatures rise.
The NWS also warns of the potential for drought development. The U.S. Drought Monitor shows abnormally dry conditions, and the NWS Climate Prediction Center forecasts a rapid onset of drought in Indiana.
