Central Indiana Storms Leave Over 72,000 Without Power

Bloomington, IN – Severe thunderstorms with damaging winds and heavy rain swept through central Indiana Tuesday evening, leaving over 72,000 customers without power. The storms, which hit the area around 5 PM, caused significant damage to power lines and electrical equipment.

According to Duke Energy, Monroe County was the hardest hit, with 42,787 customers without power. Other affected counties include Vigo, Owen, Greene, Jefferson, Clay, and Sullivan. Repair and damage assessment efforts are currently underway, with restoration times yet to be determined for most areas.

Indiana University’s Bloomington campus also experienced power outages. The IU Police and Public Safety Department issued an alert, advising students and staff to call 911 for emergencies. The university’s facilities teams are working to assess and address the damage caused by the storms.

The National Weather Service reported wind gusts of over 60 mph in some areas, leading to uprooted trees and damaged structures. Residents are urged to stay indoors and avoid any downed power lines. Further updates will be provided as repair efforts continue and more information becomes available.
