Temperatures across central Indiana are expected to plummet tonight, with lows near -1°F and wind chills as low as -20°F. A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect from 7 p.m. Sunday through 10 a.m. Wednesday, urging residents to prepare for dangerously low temperatures.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, strong winds combined with Arctic air will create hazardous conditions starting Sunday evening. By Monday morning, wind chills will likely reach -10°F to -20°F in cities such as Indianapolis, Bloomington, and Lafayette. These temperatures could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.
Residents are advised to limit time outdoors and wear layered, insulated clothing, hats, and gloves if venturing out. Travelers on major roads such as I-65 and I-70 should proceed with caution, as drifting snow and icy conditions could develop overnight.
The forecast shows highs near 12°F on Monday, with continued bitter wind chills. Monday night will drop to -3°F, while Tuesday will remain cold with highs near 8°F. Slightly warmer conditions are expected Wednesday, with temperatures climbing to the low 20s during the day.
With schools and businesses potentially impacted, officials encourage checking local closures and staying updated on road conditions. Prepare now for extended cold and ensure proper heating at home.
