Indianapolis, Indiana – Bitterly cold conditions are expected to return to central Indiana late this week as another Arctic air mass moves into the region, bringing subzero wind chills and renewed cold-weather hazards.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, a strong cold front will push through Thursday night, allowing much colder air to overspread the area. Minimum wind chill values between -5°F and -10°F are forecast from Friday morning through Saturday morning, with isolated locations dropping as low as -15°F.
Forecast graphics show widespread below-zero wind chills across cities including Indianapolis, Lafayette, Muncie, Bloomington, and Terre Haute, with the coldest readings expected during overnight and early morning hours. Forecasters note that below-normal temperatures and wind chills below zero may persist into early next week, extending the duration of cold-related impacts.
The NWS warns that frostbite can occur on exposed skin within 30 minutes at -15°F, with the risk increasing during prolonged exposure. Hypothermia is also a concern for anyone spending extended time outdoors without adequate protection.
Residents are urged to dress in layers, cover exposed skin, and limit time outdoors when possible. Drivers should be prepared for cold-related vehicle issues, including difficulty starting engines. Young workers, students, and commuters heading out early in the morning should plan for dangerous cold conditions.
The National Weather Service advises monitoring updated forecasts and potential cold-related advisories as the Arctic air settles into the region.
