Indianapolis, IN – Much of central Indiana will experience poor air quality Wednesday as elevated ozone levels prompt an Air Quality Action Day, with officials urging residents—especially those with respiratory conditions—to reduce prolonged outdoor activity.

According to the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) and the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, an Air Quality Action Day is in effect from midnight Wednesday through midnight Wednesday night for much of central Indiana.

Forecasters expect ozone concentrations to reach Level 3 on the Air Quality Index (AQI), a category considered “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups.” The advisory includes much of the Indianapolis metropolitan area and surrounding counties.

Sensitive groups—including children, older adults, people with asthma or other lung diseases, and those with heart conditions—are most likely to experience adverse health effects. Officials recommend these individuals reduce the amount of time spent outdoors and watch for symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath, or throat irritation.

For the general public, IDEM recommends making outdoor activities shorter and less strenuous, particularly during the afternoon and early evening when ozone levels are typically highest.

The Air Quality Action Day comes as central Indiana also experiences hot and humid conditions, which can contribute to elevated ozone formation and place additional stress on vulnerable populations.

Residents are encouraged to monitor local air quality conditions and follow guidance from state and local officials. Additional information, including real-time air quality data, is available through the Indiana Department of Environmental Management.

Officials advise anyone experiencing breathing difficulties or worsening respiratory symptoms to move indoors and seek medical attention if necessary.
