Springfield, IL – Light snow is expected to return to central Illinois Saturday night, bringing slick travel conditions and the potential for patchy freezing drizzle, according to the National Weather Service in Lincoln.
Forecasters say snow will spread from northwest to southeast late Saturday night, tapering off from west to east during the day Sunday. Accumulations will generally remain light — up to 1 inch north of I-72, including areas near Decatur, Champaign, and Danville.
Before precipitation ends, rain may briefly mix with snow near and south of I-70 on Sunday. The NWS notes a low chance (around 10%) of freezing drizzle between I-70 and I-74, which could lead to very slippery conditions if it occurs.
Temperatures will remain near or below freezing through early Sunday, making untreated roads, sidewalks, and bridges especially slick. The greatest travel impacts are expected overnight into early Sunday morning.
Motorists are advised to use caution and allow extra time if traveling north of I-72, where light snow and ice could make roads hazardous.
