Champaign, IL – Central Illinois will face bitter cold and snowfall on Tuesday, bringing slick roads and sub-zero wind chills to the region. Commuters should prepare for hazardous driving conditions, particularly along I-72 and I-55, as light snow and freezing temperatures make travel treacherous.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), a quick-moving snow system will develop early Tuesday morning, with snow accumulation likely under an inch. Wind chill values will drop between -5°F and -10°F, making outdoor exposure dangerous. Drivers should use caution, allowing extra time for travel, especially on untreated roadways.

By Tuesday afternoon, skies are expected to clear slightly, but temperatures will remain well below freezing, with a high of only 16°F. Gusty northwest winds up to 20 mph will exacerbate the cold, leaving wind chill values near zero throughout the day. Overnight temperatures will plummet further, reaching lows near 0°F, with wind chills dropping even lower.

The cold spell will persist through midweek, with conditions gradually improving by Thursday as daytime highs rise to around 30°F. However, the risk of icy patches and refreezing on roads will remain through the week.

Residents are advised to bundle up in layers, limit outdoor activities, and monitor updates from the Illinois Department of Transportation for road conditions. Keep emergency supplies in vehicles if traveling during the extreme cold.
