Springfield, Ill. – Pleasant late-summer weather will hold across central Illinois through Tuesday, but a sharp cold snap arrives midweek with overnight lows falling into the low 40s. Breezy winds and scattered rain will accompany the colder air beginning Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, highs will remain seasonable Sunday and Monday, topping out near 80 under mostly sunny skies. Nights will be cool in the low to mid-50s before a cold front sweeps in midweek.
The system is expected to bring showers and gusty winds Wednesday afternoon into Thursday. Cities such as Peoria, Bloomington, and Decatur could see highs in the low to mid-70s, but overnight lows will tumble into the 40s by Wednesday night. The chilly pattern continues through Friday morning, marking one of the coldest stretches since early summer.
Drivers should be alert to slick spots during scattered showers, while residents may want to pull out light jackets and prepare for colder mornings. Farmers could see short-term relief from rainfall before drier air returns late week.
Cool and quiet conditions are expected into next weekend after the midweek front moves through.
