Champaign, Illinois – Brutal heat and humidity are gripping central Illinois, with Champaign seeing heat index values soar past 110°F through early next week — and scattered severe storms adding to the threat.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, a heat advisory is in effect south of I-72, where temperatures through Monday will hover between 90–95°F, with peak “feels-like” readings hitting 113°F in cities like Decatur, Effingham and Champaign. Isolated strong to severe storms are expected each afternoon through Saturday, with storm chances ranging from 20% to 70%.

Road crews and emergency services are on alert as the heat index remains dangerously high, particularly in urban areas with poor overnight cooling. Nighttime lows in the mid-70s will offer little relief, raising the risk of heat exhaustion — especially for vulnerable residents without air conditioning.

Residents in Champaign and surrounding areas should avoid outdoor activity between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., wear light-colored clothing, stay hydrated, and check on neighbors. Power outages from isolated storm damage remain a concern through Sunday.

Relief is in sight, with a noticeable drop in heat and humidity expected by mid to late next week.
