Springfield, IL –
Rain will return to Central Illinois late Monday, continuing into Tuesday morning, before a sharp blast of cold air ushers in much colder temperatures for the rest of the week, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Central Illinois.

Forecasters say afternoon and evening rain is likely Monday, with highs in the upper 40s to low 50s. Showers will linger into early Tuesday before winds shift and colder, drier air moves in. By Wednesday, highs will only reach the 40s, with overnight lows plunging into the 20s.

The real chill arrives Thursday and Friday, when morning wind chills could dip into the teens across much of the region. The NWS describes the end of the week as “much colder,” with highs struggling to climb above the mid-30s by Friday.

No major snow is expected with this system, but forecasters warn of gusty winds and rapidly falling temperatures following Tuesday’s rain.

Residents are advised to prepare for the first winter-like stretch of the season and protect outdoor pipes, pets, and plants ahead of the midweek freeze.
