Lincoln, IL – Central Illinois residents along and west of I-55 should prepare for freezing rain, dense fog, and heavy rainfall as a hazardous weather outlook has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Lincoln.
According to the NWS, freezing rain will develop early Saturday morning, with ice accumulations exceeding a tenth of an inch west of the Illinois River. Areas as far east as I-55 may also see brief freezing rain before temperatures rise above freezing later in the morning, transitioning the precipitation into rain. Rainfall totals could exceed an inch in locations from Rushville to Springfield.
If the rain diminishes quickly tonight, dense fog could form and linger into Sunday morning, especially near and north of I-74. Visibility may be significantly reduced during this time.
Additionally, isolated thunderstorms are possible Sunday night along the I-72 corridor, though they are not expected to reach severe levels.
While spotter activation is not anticipated, the NWS encourages residents to report ice and rainfall totals to assist in monitoring weather conditions.
